Short version: we publish what a public register says, as accurately as we can. We are not the businesses listed here and we do not vouch for them. Check things that matter before you hire anyone.
What this site is
An information and monitoring service, built on the Environment Agency's public register of waste carriers, brokers and dealers for England.
We read the complete register every day, keep a record of what it said on each of those days, and compare one day against the next. That lets us do four things a copy of the register on its own cannot: publish a page for each business with the date we last checked it, join the registration to what Companies House records about the company behind it, detect the changes that matter (a registration lapsing, expiring, or quietly disappearing), and tell a subscriber about the ones affecting suppliers they have asked us to watch. We also publish written guidance about clearing a property and hiring a carrier.
We are not a waste carrier, a clearance company, or an agent for any business listed here. We do not carry out clearances, we do not employ the businesses listed, and we have no commercial relationship with them unless a page says otherwise.
What a listing means
That the business appeared on the Environment Agency's public register when we last checked, and what that register said about it: the registration number, the tier, the registration and expiry dates.
Where the register gives a company number, a listing also shows what the Companies House public record holds against it: the company status, when it was incorporated, and where it applies the date it was dissolved. Those two registers are kept by different bodies and do not talk to each other, so a waste carrier registration can remain live after the company behind it has closed. Where we can see that, we say so.
What a listing is not is a recommendation, an endorsement, or any statement about quality, competence, insurance or price. We publish what the registers say and the date we read them. See where our data comes from.
Accuracy
We take accuracy seriously. We read the register every day and, on the overwhelming majority of days, that is exactly what happens. Because we depend on a public source we do not control, there may occasionally be a delay of a day or so. Every page carries the date we last read the register, so you never have to guess how current it is, and we would rather show nothing than show something wrong.
Even so, the register can be out of date, a business can change between our checks, and we can make mistakes. So the site is provided as it is, and you should verify anything that matters directly with the business or with the Environment Agency register before relying on it.
Tell us about an error at corrections@checkedandcleared.co.uk and we will fix it.
Your responsibilities when hiring
If you produce waste, the law places a duty of care on you. If waste from your property is dumped illegally, you can be held responsible even though someone else dumped it. Checking a carrier is registered is part of discharging that duty, but it is not all of it: you should also get a waste transfer note and keep it.
Using this site does not discharge your duty of care, and we cannot do it for you.
Using our content
The register data is not ours and is licensed from its publishers, whose terms are on the data sources page. Everything we built on top of it is ours: the writing and the design, and also the day-by-day record we keep of what the register said, the way we match a registration to a company, the changes we derive from comparing one day against the next, and the monitoring, analysis and alerting built on those. You are welcome to link to any page here.
Please do not scrape the site or attempt to extract the underlying dataset in bulk. Much of it concerns individuals, and we are careful about how it is exposed for that reason.
Liability
We do not exclude liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or anything else the law does not allow us to exclude. Beyond that, we are not liable for loss arising from your dealings with a business listed here, since that is a matter between you and them.
If you pay us for something
Most of this site is free to use and free to be listed on. Two things are not, and this section is about those. Nothing here affects your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 or the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013.
What we sell
To a business that produces waste, a subscription that watches the carriers you use against the register and tells you when something changes: Watch at £29 a month or £290 a year, Monitor at £79 a month or £790 a year, Assure at £1,990 a year. There is also a one-off audit document at £149. What each includes is on the pricing page and is the description that forms part of this contract.
To a business we list, two things about its own entry, set out in full on the page for waste carriers. Enhanced, £5 a month or £50 a year, publishes contact details you give us on your own listing. Featured, £15 a month or £150 a year, includes Enhanced and additionally places your listing in a clearly labelled block at the top of one town, postcode district or postcode area page that you already appear on. You may hold more than one placement. At most three businesses appear in any one block, and when a page is full we will not sell a fourth.
Claiming a listing, correcting the categories we hold, giving us the name you trade under, and having a listing removed are free.
Prices, payment and renewal
- Prices are in pounds sterling and are the total you pay. Scribespire Limited is not registered for VAT, so no VAT is charged or reclaimable on these amounts.
- Payment is taken by Stripe. We never see or store your card details.
- A subscription renews automatically at the end of each period at the price then shown for it, until you cancel. We will tell you by email before any price change affects you, and you may cancel instead.
- A monthly subscription renews every month from the date you started it; an annual one every twelve months.
Cancelling
- Fourteen days to change your mind. If you cancel within 14 days of buying, we refund you in full. This is the Consumer Contracts Regulations right and we extend it to every customer rather than arguing about which of you it covers.
- After that, cancel whenever you like. Your subscription runs to the end of the period you have paid for and then stops. We do not charge an exit fee and there is no minimum term.
- Cancel from your account, in a few clicks, without writing to anybody. If that does not work, email hello@checkedandcleared.co.uk and we will do it.
- If we cannot take a payment we will try again and write to you. If it still cannot be taken the subscription ends; nothing you have already paid for is taken away.
What we will and will not do with what you give us
- Anything you supply about your own business is shown on the site as yours and clearly marked as such. We do not check it, and we say so beside it.
- A person reads everything before it is published. We may decline to publish something and will tell you why; if we decline all of it, we refund the period in question.
- Paying changes nothing about the licence facts we publish about you. It cannot change your registration status, your tier, your expiry date or where you appear in an ordinary list. How we order listings sets this out in full.
- You keep whatever rights you have in what you send us. You give us permission to publish it on the site while you are paying for it, and we take it down when you stop.
What we do not promise
We will provide these services with reasonable care and skill. What we cannot promise is a result: no number of visitors, no enquiries, no position in anybody else's search engine, and no particular outcome from being listed. If a service is unavailable for a prolonged period through our fault, tell us and we will refund the affected period.
Changes and governing law
We may update these terms; the date at the top shows when we last did. These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales.
