How we order listings, and what we get paid for
The short version: a registration that has expired sorts last, everything else is alphabetical, and nothing on this site can be bought into a better licence status. A business can pay to appear in a labelled block above the list on one page. That is the whole of it, and the rest of this page is the detail.
How we order listings
A business can pay to appear in a labelled block above the list on one page. Here is exactly what that buys, and what it does not, so you can hold us to it either way.
- At most three per page. When a page is full we will refuse the sale rather than sell a position that no longer means anything.
- Ordered by who bought first. Not by who paid more, because there is one price, and not by anything we judge about the businesses.
- Only where the business already appears. Nobody can buy the top of a town they do not have a registered address in.
- Only on page one. A block on page four would not be what was bought.
- Pages nobody has paid for stay exactly as they were, and say so.
- A current registration firstA registration that has expired sorts below one that has not. That is the only quality-like judgement in the order, and it is a fact from the register rather than an opinion of ours.
- Then alphabeticallyEvery registered business we hold for that place or category, in name order. It is arbitrary, but it is consistent, it does not change between visits, and it is not for sale.
- Nothing is removed for commercial reasonsA firm that does not pay us appears in exactly the same list, with exactly the same licence treatment. A firm that complains about us does too.
What does not affect the order
- Whether a business has claimed its listing
- Whether it has given us contact details, a website or a description
- Whether it subscribes to anything we offer
- Whether it has complained to us
- How old the business is, or how large
Where our data comes from
Every licence fact comes from the Environment Agency's public register of waste carriers, brokers and dealers. We store what it says and show the date we read it on every page that carries a fact from it.
We read the register every day, and on the overwhelming majority of days that is exactly what happens. It comes from a public source we do not control, so there may occasionally be a delay of a day or so, which is why every page shows the date we last read it.

The full licence terms, attribution and refresh cadence for every source are on where our data comes from.
What the register tells you, and what it does not
It does tell you
- That the business is registered to transport waste
- Which tier the registration sits in
- When the registration expires
- Which waste categories it covers
- The date we last read the register
It does not tell you
- That the work will be done well
- That the price is fair
- That we have met, checked or approved the firm
- That anyone has inspected their vehicles or staff
- Anything about complaints, insurance or disputes
Telling us we have got this wrong
If the order looks wrong, or a listing looks like it is being favoured, tell us at hello@checkedandcleared.co.uk. We would rather hear it. To correct or remove a listing, email corrections@checkedandcleared.co.uk. You do not have to explain why, and we act within five working days.
